Truro hardcore band invades St. John’s

Following the footsteps of Genetic Angry, LP and VS, Truro’s newest hardcore outfit Cold Summer is coming to St. John’s on Thursday, Nov. 5 at Distortion at 11:00 pm for $5.
Guitarist Anthony Geddes and bassist Adam Cavanaugh say the band started jamming around August or September. Despite suffering a couple of line-up changes early on, Cold Summer found one that works. They also found a former band member able to travel with them to Newfoundland.
“I think we all have pretty different [influences],” said Geddes. Eyehategod, Indian Summer, Ampere, and Pissed Jeans were among the bands named.
The band was hoping to have a demo ready for Newfoundland, but it probably won’t be finished in time for their St. John’s debut. Cavanaugh hopes to have it available for download shortly after they return home. In the future, they plan to do a split with Halifax band Shinobi.
Many members have never been in bands with each other before, a rarity in such a small community. “I’ve heard someone say that the punk and hardcore scene in Truro sucks because it’s just the same people over and over again in every band,” said Cavanaugh. “I think despite having a small scene, Truro is able to produce some awesome bands.”
There has been a close-knit relationship developing between St. John’s and Truro for a couple of years. Cold Summer will be the fourth band from Truro to make it to the island. In return, St. John’s bands Judge Dread, Regiment, Map to Temenos, Homesick, Icebreaker, and Weak Link have made the trip to Truro.
“I’ve made a lot of friends over there and I find now it’s becoming routine for bands from Newfoundland to come here and us to go over,” said Geddes. “This will be my second time there in four months.”
