Wolfmother Cosmic Egg Universal Rock

A-

If Led Zeppellin and Pink Floyd had a child, it would be named Wolfmother. If you can believe it, Cosmic Egg is even bigger, fatter, and freakier than their debut album which came out in 2006.

They sound like they arrived on Earth via a time warp from the ’70s. The standout track, Sundial sounds like Black Sabbath and The Who are battling it out for the fate of the universe while Hendrix fixes his headband.

Their lead singer Andrew Stockdale even affects a Masters Of Reality-era Ozzy Osbourne vocal on the song during the high-pitched bat-biting chorus. For those who hunger for Zeppelin epics in the vein of “Immigrant Song” but wish that Peter Gabriel from Genesis was consulted before Robert Plant wrote anything, look no further than the appropriately titled “In The Castle.”

Like Plant, Stockdale sounds like he brandishing Thor’s hammer on the mast of a Viking ship en route to Valhalla as he wails, “Would you like to walk into the kingdoms of the sun?” Hells yeah, there is not a single dull moment on this entire record. You’ve got to admire the balls of a band that uses the word Cosmic for an album title.

What makes it even better is that is also the only way to describe their latest effort. There hasn’t been Rock and Roll like this since Peter Gabriel shaved the middle of his head in a reverse Mohawk.

On the track “Far Away,” they sound obviously influenced by The Beatles, but then who isn’t? Especially with lyrics like, “I believe that love is going to last forever and it’s always on my mind” melodiously sung over an electric piano percussion.

Listen to The Beatles and Wolfmother. They were right. All you need is love. It’s cosmic.
