Cinema Series’ Last Supper of the semester reveals what’s really on your plate

Supermarket trips and lunch will never be the same

MUN Cinema Series

Mildred is squaring down on the last entry for the fall semester, the promised screening of Food Inc. You’ll recall the print failed to arrive during a perfect storm earlier in the fall. Now it’s returning for the last slot in this series. Meanwhile, plans are afoot for a winter season that promises to be exciting and full of award-winning alternative, independent, and always provocative films that never normally play at a theatre near you.

I’ve already written about the enormous appeal of the documentary Food Inc., and so I won’t repeat myself here. Besides, you can see for yourself by simply browsing any site where the film is mentioned. It’s pretty well universally acclaimed.

What I will do is let you know that this season for the first time in a long while, the MUN Cinema Series barely broke even. Not sure why that is but it’s a discouraging fact. One hopes that the winter season will see less competition for your attention on Thursday evenings. The films are almost always brilliant and much admired by critics, even if your particular tastes aren’t always satisfied by this or that genre.

Why The Cove or Beaches Of Agnes didn’t sell out is beyond me. Both feature docs have recently been listed as this year’s Academy Award nominations. And if you missed In The Loop last week your life is the lesser for it, even if you don’t quite realize it.

Anyhow, my good film friends, think of the Cinema Series next January when the wind is howling and you’ll be in need of some substantial intellectual nourishment. Watch the web site in the next few weeks –www.mun.ca/cinema – for new 2010 season listings. Until then, good luck with your end of semester trials, and take someone out to a movie over the holidays. Cheers!

Food Inc. plays Thursday, Dec. 3, at Empire Theatres Studio 12 in the Avalon Mall. Tickets are $9 for students and seniors, $10 regular admission. Tickets go on sale at 6:00 pm, show time is 7:00 pm.
