Rah Rah makes me yawn. There are some flowery melodies going on here, but they go on for far too long. Their riffs are endlessly drawn out, and are driven at the same energy level for longer than I’d enjoy to hear, like on the track, “Tentacles.” These guys are gaining ground on the indie scene around our fair nation.
The vocals get shared between many members, but predominantly by one guy and a girl who sounds like she’s got her mouse tail intentionally caught in a cruel and painful trap. Their group sing-a-longs kill me, and their chorus lines leave me sadly unfulfilled. The bad mix of voices drowns out their rather good phrasing. As for lyrics, I really connected with, “Fuck all you stock brokers in the crowd.”
Their main body of sound stems from the guitar while their drums and bass provide some substance. Someone should tune up that violin or better yet replace it with a blow-up guitar from the carnival next time it comes to Regina.
There has been a lot of music coming out in the past two years that sounds similar to these guys. I gather from their MySpace page that they are still pretty young, so let’s hope for some development in their sound in years to come. Right now they kinda sound like indie movie music meets Sharon, Lois and Bram.
