Women’s Volleyball drop two to Acadia

It was another tough weekend for Memorial’s women’s volleyball team as they were defeated twice in straight sets by the Acadia University Axewomen in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

On Saturday night it was all Axewomen as the Sea-Hawks were unable to get anything going offensively, tallying only 20 kills, while adding 22 attack errors. Left side Sasha Wilkins led the way with 10 kills, while adding two service aces and 12 digs. On the Acadia side of the net Alana Murphy tallied 10 kills, while Nicole Davidson and Alyssa Berry each added seven on the way Acadia’s 25-18, 25-21, 25-17 victory.

In Sunday’s rematch the story was much the same as the Axewomen defeated the Sea-Hawks 25-19, 25-12, 25-21 on their home court. Alyssa Berry had nine kills and no hitting errors for Acadia, while libero Pam Giordani had a match high 21 digs. It was Wilkins once again leading the way for Memorial with eight kills, followed by sophomore Erin Bursey who chipped in with five kills, and nine digs in the Sea-Hawks defeat. With the victories, Acadia now moves into a tie for first place in the AUS.

The Sea-Hawks will now take Christmas break to re-group before they open 2010 at home on Jan. 8 when they host the last place Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues at the Field House. The Sea-Hawks faced their share of adversity opening the season and look to settle in and find a rhythm in the competitive AUS.

All of the Sea-Hawks varsity teams are now in their competition break as the student-athletes focus on academics and practice. For upcoming schedule information visit www.goseahawks.ca
