Break dancing student brings some Power to MUNSU
Matt Power hired to be the new coordinator of student life

After Bradley Russell’s resignation from his elected position as Executive Director of Student Life last semester, Matt Power applied for job of Coordinator of Student Life, an interim position set up fulfill the duties until the next general election.
Power will carry on Russell’s work for the time being. He reportedly wants the student body to be aware of the position he holds.
“What I’m essentially looking to do is to tell people that I have this position,” said Power. “Just in the interest of making students and people more aware of the political process.”
Power says that most students are unaware of the political end of the Students’ Union and he would like to recreate a community with the students.
Unlike Russell, Power was not elected into office. As a result, he is not the Executive Director, but Coordinator, of student life and does not hold as much responsibility as Russell did. Power says his duties are scaled back in comparison to his predecessor.
For instance Brad Vincent of MUN Recreation will be organizing Winter Carnival rather than Power himself.
Power says his position mostly focuses on event planning and working with the student body to operate the Breezeway to its utmost capacity.
Power believes the Breezeway may have suffered in the past. “I feel like the bar kind of lost its way a little bit. A lot of things were happening.”
He hopes to get the bar back on track and give it a more approachable, student community feel.
Power has plans to bring back some rock shows to the Breezeway, while continuing to promote various dance and hip hop acts.
He also hopes to incorporate more of the student body within Breezeway events.
“We are working with the Board Sports Society. I’m trying to get a lot of student groups in there,” said Power.
“We are trying to make people more aware that the Breezeway isn’t just a bar. A lot of people immediately associate the bar with drinking or with whatever else,” said Power.
“The Breezeway during the day, is a huge concert venue, or for a conference, or dining experience. It can be a whole lot of different things and I know that.”
