Men's volley team falls short
Seahawks take a 1-2 record from Interlock weekend
By Warren Gordon
The MUN Seahawks' Men's Volleyball team locked horns with five other universities this past weekend as they played host to a AUS-Quebec Interlock tournament. The tournament was the second of three Interlock tournaments, which are held throughout the season, and it was the first time it has been held in St. John's.
MUN head coach Luke Harris was happy to host the tournament.
“It's about time we had it. I think it's been fantastic thus far, with no issues. It's great to see the fan support out there, [and] it's been a good weekend.”
The Seahawks picked up a win Friday evening against the Université de Montréal Carabins winning three sets out of four.
The team then fell short to Université Laval Rouge et Or three sets to one on Saturday afternoon.
Later that evening, the Seahawks were ousted by their rivals, Université de Sherbrooke Vert et Or, three sets to zero.
Harris believes Sherbrooke is the team's biggest rival.
“Rivalries are difficult; we had a rough couple of years. We are just maturing as a team now. But, without a doubt, I think Sherbrooke is our biggest rivalry.”
Harris says his team had a goal to reach going into this weekend's AUS action.
“Realistic goal was to go 2-1. We wanted to beat Montreal and Sherbrooke. We don't expect to beat Laval, we just put up a good fight. I thought we did that today—taking down the number four team in the country is not an easy thing to do.”
This past weekend's men's volleyball action was the first peak that fans had of the team all season.
Their schedule runs shorter than most other varsity sports. However, Harris says that training isn't too time constricted.
“We start in September, and our first match isn't until [the last part of] October, so we do get a bit of time to train. Being a student athlete presents its own problems, but we make do. There are a lot of challenges, but I think we're doing well thus far.”
The men will not see action now until they go head-to-head with the University of New Brunsick's Varsity Reds on Jan. 14 at the Field house.
