Men's volleyball team struggles

Women’s team tied for fourth

The Memorial women's Seahawks volleyball team dominated their weekend home games to further their remarkable comeback story. The girls started their season an awful 1-6, and have now won four games in a row. Memorial now sits in a tie for fourth place with St. Francis Xaxier.

The team lost all five games on the road this season, but has won five of their six games at home. While there is still nearly half a season left to play, the Seahawks are positioned now control their post-season destiny.

The girls saw action Saturday and Sunday against the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds. The Seahawks swept the Varsity Reds (1-10) in both games. The scores for Saturday's games were 25-15, 25-23, 25-15, while Sunday's games were 25-18, 25-20, 25-19.

Sam March dominated for the Seahawks on Saturday, scoring 14 kills and having nine digs. Chantel Jones was also a force, scoring 12 kills and serving three aces. Angela Peddle finished the game with eight kills and five digs, while Erin Bursey had four kills and 11 digs. Beth Forsey put up 39 assists in the victory.

The Varsity Reds were led on offense by Katrina Legutky and Emma Hunt, each with five kills, and Vanja Mitrovic with four kills. The team's offense and defense were much more spread out on Friday's game. Jones once again led the team in digs, posting six, while Hunt and Legutky added five each.

Memorial was led in attack on Sunday by Jones and Bursey, each scoring 10 kills. Angela Peddle added nine, while March added seven kills and nine digs. Forsey had 37 assists for the Seahawks.

Mitrovic led the Varsity Reds women with 11 kills, those she also led with six errors. Rebecca Glancy was next in both categories, with nine kills and five errors. Monica Jones was a monster defensively, totalling 16 digs for New Brunswick. Paige Paulsen added 30 assists in the loss.

The Memorial Seahawks' men's volleyball team did not fare as well as their female counterparts over the weekend. The boys fell to UNB 3-0 on Saturday and 3-1 on Sunday. The Seahawks currently sit with a 1-9 record, good for last place in the three-team league. UNB, by contrast, sit first, with a 7-3 record. The Seahawks fell 18-25, 21-25, 21-25 Saturday, and 18-25, 25-22, 21-25, 19-25 Sunday.

Saturday's game was led on offense by Andrew Stephens, with eight kills and four digs. Alex Barrett and Andrew Upshall contributed six kills each, and seven and five digs respectively. Barrett also had two service aces, and Brad Pitcher led the team with 24 assists.

Sunday's game featured Stephens' 12 kills and six digs. Pitcher contributed 30 assists and three service aces, while Alex Barrett had six kills, two service aces, and 11 digs. Nathan Tilley had six kills and two blocks.

The women's team has the upcoming weekend off, while the men travel to an interlock tournament in Montreal.
